The History of Christies

Christies was originally established in 1946 as ‘GJ Christie & Co’ during the early post-war years. The original founders, Gordon and Brian Christie had the foresight to establish a business designed to assist others with their own business affairs. Many of Christies’ clients were, and still are, rural sector businesses throughout central and north-western NSW.

As Dubbo grew from a town to a city, Christies expanded taking on more employees to meet the growing demands of their clients. In 1949 at the age of 18, Ron Rich joined the firm under the mentorship of founder Gordon Christie. In later years, Ron became the proprietor and in association with Ken McAnally, they were instrumental in heading up the firm until the end of the century. Ron was a selfless community-minded man, described as “Dubbo’s most respected citizen” by the mayor Tony McGrane in the year of his death.

Christies is now owned and operated by David Rich (son of Ron), Jeremy Dickson and David Chapman – three partners with the united continuing vision of providing trusted, lifelong quality client service.

Our Approach to Offshoring

The ease with which data can be stored and transferred online has created momentum for enormous changes that are sweeping through the accounting industry. The pressure is on firms to outsource a number of traditional accounting functions offshore such as bookkeeping and drafting annual financial reports and income tax returns. Advisors to the professional accounting industry are actively encouraging firms to limit the hiring of local Australian staff and instead focus on employing new staff overseas to carry out these functions.

We have discussed the changes with a number of our clients and the overwhelming response has been that we need to keep our staff local. We have considered the changes that are taking place and we agree with our clients.

Our opinion is that offshoring the important work that we complete for our clients is a short sighted step for our industry so we are bucking the trend and continuing to grow locally. We cannot guarantee that we will never utilise offshoring but for the foreseeable future we intend to contribute to developing the skills of young accountants here in Dubbo and continue to reinvest in our local community.

In the long term we believe that local knowledge and experience will continue to be the major factor that small and medium businesses consider when choosing their advisors and our firm intends to be at the front for many years to come.
